Introduction to Nylon Microporous Membranes
In the liquid filtration industry, nylon microporous membranes are one of the most widely used types of microporous membranes. In our decades of membrane production and R&D history at Membrane Solutions, the Nylon Membrane has the longest history. After years of product development, our nylon membranes are mainly divided into three categories.
Supported Nylon Membranes
The first category is the Membrane Solutions hydrophilic nylon membrane with support (PET), with pore sizes ranging from 0.05 µm to 10 µm. The membrane pore structure is a symmetric sponge-like structure, as shown in the figure below:

Customizable Performance of Supported Nylon Membranes
The supported hydrophilic nylon membrane is made from pure nylon 66. The performance of each pore size can be customized and developed according to the actual filtration requirements. For example, for the same 0.45 µm pore size, we can produce products with different pore size distributions based on specific application needs.

Unsupported Nylon Membranes
The second category is the unsupported hydrophilic pure nylon membrane, made from pure nylon 6. The pore sizes range from 0.05 µm to 1.0 µm. The unsupported nylon membrane is coated on one side of the support layer , and its pore structure is asymmetric, as shown in Figure 2:

Both of these two types nylon membrane are made with NIPS,the casting solutions of poly-amide are coated on the supported layer and immersed into a non-solvent system and phase separation is generated through non-solvent diffusion and then micro-porous structure is obtained. The hydrophilic pure nylon membrane is peel off from the supported layer after pore-forming and treatment and without support so the dissolution date is good with HPLC at different wavelengths.
Positively Charged Nylon Membranes
The third category is the Positively Charged Nylon Membrane, which undergoes a surface modification of the first and second types of membranes to introduce positively charged groups through chemical grafting. These groups are grafted into the membrane pores, giving the membrane a positive charge. In addition to physically filtering micron-sized particles through the membrane pore structure, the positively charged membrane can also adsorb and capture smaller negatively charged substances in the filtration medium, such as endotoxins. The pore structure of positively nylon membrane is shown below:

Applications of Membrane Solutions' Nylon Membranes
Currently, Membrane Solutions' nylon membranes are highly mature and widely used in the production of various filtration products, such as syringe filters, membrane discs, sterilizing filters, pleated filter cartridges, capsule filters, and disk filters. These products are extensively applied in industries including laboratory consumables, chemicals, water treatment, food and beverages, and biopharmaceuticals.

Research and Development at Membrane Solutions
Membrane Solutions also has dedicated R&D teams and production departments for the development and manufacturing of various filtration products, such as our Laboratory Filtration Products Department (Products for Lab filtration) and Life Science Filtration Products Department (Life Science filtration solutions).
